Before & After: The Tap Base and Drain Rim Most Cleans Miss
A close look at what builds up around a kitchen tap and drain — and why it disappears with a proper deep clean, not just a wipe-down.

The photos above are the same kitchen sink, taken seconds apart on either side of a deep clean. Nothing has changed except the cleaning: same tap, same drain, same porcelain. What's different is what was sitting in the seal around the tap base and the rim of the drain, two spots that get touched, splashed and rinsed every single day, and still end up looking like the before photo.
Why this spot in particular
The base of a tap and the lip of a drain basket are both places where water sits rather than runs off. Every time the tap is used, a little water gets trapped in the seam where it meets the worktop, and every time the sink drains, food particles and grease catch on the rim before they wash away. Over weeks and months, that trapped moisture combines with hard water minerals and residue to form exactly the kind of dull, gritty build-up you can see above. A cloth wiped across the surface never gets underneath it, because the grime isn't really on the surface, it's bonded into the seam itself.
It's not about how often you clean
This isn't a sign of a dirty kitchen. It's what happens in any kitchen that gets used properly, cleaned daily, and still never gets a deep clean of the spots a normal routine can't reach. Peterborough's water is also moderately hard, which speeds up limescale build-up around taps and drains compared with a soft water area, so it's worth checking these spots more often here than the average cleaning guide suggests.
Getting back to the after photo
The result above didn't need bleach or a harsh descaler, just the right product left in contact long enough to actually break down the limescale and grease, followed by a proper rinse and dry. It's a five-minute job once you know where to look and what to use, but it's also one of the first things that gets skipped in a quick tidy-up, which is exactly why it builds up again so fast.
If your kitchen sink is looking closer to the before photo than the after one, it's usually a sign the rest of the kitchen, the hob, the oven, the extractor, is overdue for the same treatment.
